Net Zero Policy: ICarta Technologies

1. Statement of Intent
ICarta Technologies is committed to reaching Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest. We recognise the climate emergency and accept our role in limiting global warming to $1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement.

2. Scope of Emissions
We measure and report on our carbon footprint using the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, covering:
-
Scope 1: Direct emissions from fuel combustion (e.g., company vehicles, gas boilers). Note: As a remote-first tech firm, we anticipate these to be near zero.
-
Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity (e.g., powering offices and home-working setups).
-
Scope 3 (Subset): In accordance with UK PPN 06/21, we include:
-
Business travel.
-
Employee commuting.
-
Waste generated in operations.
-
Upstream and downstream transportation.
-
Cloud infrastructure: Specifically the carbon cost of our hosting and SaaS tools.
-
3. Carbon Reduction Targets
To reach our 2050 goal, ICarta Technologies has set the following interim milestones:
-
Baseline Year (2024/25): Establishing our first full carbon audit.
-
2030 Target: Reduce absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 50% from the baseline.
-
2040 Target: Achieve a 90% reduction in emissions, with only hard-to-abate residual emissions remaining.
-
2050 Target: Full Net Zero through the use of high-quality, UK-verified carbon removals for any remaining emissions.
4. The "Digital First" Reduction Strategy
We will achieve these targets through four primary levers:
Cloud Optimisation: Moving all production workloads to "Carbon Aware" data centre regions powered by 100% renewable energy.
Supply Chain Vetting: Reviewing all vendors annually. We will transition away from suppliers who do not have a published Net Zero roadmap by 2028.
Energy Efficiency: Mandating "Dark Mode" by default in development, optimising API calls to reduce server load, and implementing "Green Coding" standards.
Operational Travel: Maintaining a "Virtual by Default" policy for client meetings. Where travel is essential, rail is mandated for all journeys under 400 miles.
5. Carbon Offsetting vs. Neutralisation
We follow the SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) hierarchy:
-
Eliminate: Remove the source of carbon (e.g., switching to 100% renewable power).
-
Reduce: Improve efficiency to use less (e.g., efficient code).
-
Neutralise: Only once emissions are reduced by 90% will we use permanent carbon removal technologies (such as Direct Air Capture or UK Woodland Carbon Code projects) to neutralise the remainder.
6. Reporting and Transparency
We will publish an annual Carbon Reduction Progress Report on our website. This report will detail our current emissions against our baseline and provide an update on the success of our reduction projects.
